JavaScript

The functions in this website (finding people, displaying their information, drawing charts, etc) are created using a computer programming language called PHP and this runs programs on the internet provider's server (computer). These PHP functions generate the web pages you see, in another language called HTML, and download them to your PC/laptop/tablet for viewing.

HTML is a language used for organising the arrangement and appearance of text and pictures on the page - but it can't calculate anything.

'JavaScript' is yet another programming language but it can calculate things so some of the HTML web pages have little bits of JavaScript in them to do the things that HTML can't. These include:
  • Warning messages
  • Date banners
  • Calculating and storing (in a cookie) the screen width
  • Forward and Back buttons
  • And one or two others.
