Joel was born on 27-Jun-1768

The wholesale drug importation business 'J. J. & A. Post' was run initially by the brothers Joel, Jotham and Allison Post, later to be run by Jotham, Allison and Waldron Blaau Post. J & A & W Post had premises at 44 Cedar Street.

Joel also owned 49 Wall Street - as mentioned in the Mercantile Advertiser, 1834.

FIRE IN WALL STREET.— A little after 7 o'clock last evening a volley of smoke was discovered issuing from the roof of the large three story brick building No. 49 Wall street, owned by Joel Post — and, before the flames could be subdued, the roof and garret were destroyed. The other part of the building was used entirely for offices, which were much damaged by water; the books, etc. were removed to places of safety. The occupants were, A. H. Palmer, in the 3rd storey back room; and Job a J. Boyd, in front room in 2nd storey; M. Panon and L. Lorut in front rooms, and N.Talcot in back room, in 1st storey, Jackson Insurance Company, and National Insurance Company; in the basement, Clarkson &Co., and the Seamen's Savings Bank. In the garret, where the fire originated, and in which we understand there had not been a light for some time, were eight bales of cotton, besides a quantity of cotton samples, books, beards, and other combustible articles.

In 1792 he became a Member of the General Society of Mechanics and Tradesmen

Joel married his 1st wife, Elizabeth Browne, on 21-May-1796 and they had 6 children:

  • Winifred
  • Mary
  • George (the famous Architect)
  • Henry
  • Alfred
  • Joel
And he was married a 2nd time to Alma Floyd, on 29-Apr-1820 and they had four more children:
  • Anne
  • Edward
  • John
  • Wright Eli
Soon after their wedding, in 1821, he bought a property called Claremont as a summer home. Shortly after that he bought, the adjoining property Monte Alta in Riverside Park, New York.
This estate has a fascinating history - see Claremont.

The sale of the estate, with the final lots not being sold until 1909, was a source of great wealth which benefitted his children and grandchildren.

Joel died of Apoplexy at 336 Pearl Street (now redeveloped of course) on 7-Apr-1835 and was buried in the New York Marble Cemetery on Second Avenue, "God's half acre" on 9-Apr-1835 (Vault 108)
